About
Inspired predominately by the Baroque period and the Italian Bel Composto where painting, architecture and sculpture created the “beautiful Whole,” my work is an expression and reinterpretation of the historical image within the context of contemporary art practices; primarily focusing on the portrayal of emotions and the passions of the soul, through landscape, gesture and expression. Like the Bel Composto, my aim is to transport the viewer into another realm.
My "usual" art practice is of large, black and white abstract expressionist works reflecting spiritually charged manmade spaces, however, certain events have led me to an insatiable need for the comfort of solitude and peace which I have found in the natural landscape. Although I will never fully depart from my "usual" practice, an artists needs to do what feels right at the time. I have come from high intensity works depicting the passions of the soul, to a calm, meditative subject displaying somewhat unremarkable views of the natural world, connecting with creation.
From the deep green fields of Somerset, or the misty mornings views along the Campaspe River in the Macedon ranges; I find myself being transported into a realm where I feel grounded in peace, solitude and comfort. I have found refuge in the pockets of light that are partially obscured by trees and foliage, which then create a path, or conduit to another pocket of reality.
